Jon Hutchison, CEO of Business Events Sydney (BESydney), has been recognised by his global peers for his outstanding work and contribution to the industry.

During the BESydney seminar held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre on June 6, where global leaders discussed Sydney’s business events future, the NSW Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner presented an award of appreciation to Hutchison, as he stepped down from his 14-year career as CEO.

Hutchison acknowledged the outstanding performance and expertise of his splendid team at BESydney. Under his leadership, BESydney has positioned Sydney as the leading business events city in Australia and the region.
In the recent 2010 International Convention and Congress Association (ICCA) ratings, Sydney jumped 17 places and is now ranked number 10 out of 364 global business meeting destinations. Within the Asia Pacific region Sydney is ranked as the number 2 business events destination, second only to Singapore.
This award and acknowledgment adds to Hutchison’s professional accolades and achievements, which includes Chair of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), and also being the first non-American to chair the Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI) based in Washington DC.
Prior to his appointment to the Sydney Bureau Hutchison was MD of the Australian Tourist Commission.
In 2011, IMEX recognised Hutchinson with Academy Awards, from four global regions, praised for his ability to consistently reach high standards throughout and for setting an excellent example for others. The IMEX awards celebrate and recognise excellence and achievement among top meetings and incentives industry professionals. They are announced at the largest, most prestigious meetings’ industry trade show that attracts a global attendance of approximately 9,000 people.
In 2006, Hutchison was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his service to tourism and business through promoting Australia as a travel destination, and in leadership and advisory roles with industry organisations.
Hutchison’s closing speech to over 100 delegates during last weeks seminar, congratulated not only his team at BESydney, also the NSW Government on their initiative of significant infrastructure development and renewal slated for Sydney.
“It’s important that we as a city understand the value of the opportunity created. Sydney is a world leader. We are ranked the number ten global business events destination, and hold the number two position in the Asia Pacific region. This is a remarkable achievement. Despite competing cities investing heavily in infrastructure and supporting bids, the underlying talent existing in Sydney shines through. A top five global ranking is entirely possible,” Hutchison says.
He left his audience with a positive note on his thoughts, sharing that he believes that the timing is right. Saying that he thinks there is an immense opportunity for Sydney to make the most of a significant shift taking place in the world congress and meetings environment, and the rapid growth in Asia, that will surely have implications for Australia and Sydney.
Not sure what Hutchison has on his agenda for the immediate future, however he will be leaving behind a great legacy and, enthusiastic and talented team and will certainly be missed.
