The recent announcement by the Victorian Labour government regarding the $242 million expansion of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre is being loudly applauded by Melbourne’s hotels.
Peter Crinis Chairman, of the AHA Victorian Accommodation division stated;
“Hotel investors and operators have shown enormous confidence in the Melbourne market with unprecedented hotel room supply growth over the past 18 months. This increase in supply was based on the expectation that Victoria would continue to lead the way in business tourism infrastructure investment.”
Peter went on to say,
“Melbourne should be delighted with this recent announcement. Not only does the city boast a wide variety and some of the best hotels in Australia, it continues to show confidence in the appeal of the city to high spending national and international audiences.
By investing in world class infrastructure such as this, the government is ensuring continued significant growth of jobs in the hotel sector, and that Melbourne will continue to lead the way in business tourism in Australia”
A versatile exhibition space of 12,000 square metres will be integrated with both the existing 30,000 square metre Melbourne Exhibition Centre and the 5500+ Melbourne Convention Centre which opened in 2009. The extension is expected to commence construction in 2012 with completion anticipated by 2014.
