Behind the scenes preparations are underway for another spectacular fireworks celebration to reaffirm Sydney as the New Year’s Eve capital of the world!
“Each year more than 1.5 million people gather around our iconic harbour and the eyes of the world are on Sydney for one of the biggest, best and most watched New Year’s Eve celebrations on the planet,” said Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.
“We’re inviting everyone back again this December and are busy planning another awe inspiring event to welcome the New Year and the new decade ahead.”
Sydney New Year’s Eve is the largest and most technologically advanced annual fireworks show in the world featuring 7000 kilograms of explosive devices, including approximately 11,000 shells, 20,000 shooting comets and 100,000 individual pyrotechnic effects fired from barges, city rooftops and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The event features aerial displays, a Harbour of Light Parade, 9.00pm Family Fireworks, the Midnight Finale and the highly-anticipated Bridge Effect.
2010 is the third and final year for Creative Director Rhoda Roberts and the first year for new Sydney New Year’s Eve Producer Di Henry. Di joins the team with extensive experience in event producing and various awards including the Medal of Order of Australia (OAM) for services to events. For the last decade she has managed every Olympic Torch Relay and Commonwealth Games baton relay, working in more than 92 countries.
Di and Rhoda and the rest of the Sydney New Year’s Eve team have been working for the past 15 months with the Sydney New Year’s Eve team on this year’s event.
“New Year’s Eve is Sydney’s favourite time to party and celebrate our remarkable City with friends, family and visitors from all over the world,” said Rhoda.
“It’s been an absolute privilege to work on this internationally renowned event and I can’t wait to reveal some of the surprises we’ve got planned this year.”
For a safe and enjoyable 2010 Sydney New Year’s Eve:
- Pick a vantage point and be aware that popular areas fill up quickly
- Plan ahead if you’re heading to the harbour foreshore and take public transport
- Remember not to take glass to the event and place rubbish into bins provided
Each year the City of Sydney appoints an official charity partner to Sydney New Year’s Eve. We work with the charity partner to generate awareness of their valuable work or support their programs.
Last year, we were proud to have the Australian Conservation Foundation as the official charity of 2009 Sydney New Year’s Eve. Previous charity partners have included Planet Ark, WWF-Australia, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and Oxfam. The charity partner for 2010 Sydney New Year’s Eve will be announced in December 2010.
Sydney New Year’s Eve celebrations have been nominated as Australia’s Favourite Event. Members of the public can vote online – enter event code SNYE09. Voting ends 12 September 2010.
